Coronavirus Pandemic Claims Youngest Victim In Kane County

A woman in her 20s was among the new COVID-19 deaths reported Monday in Kane County, according to public health officials.

KANE COUNTY, IL — A Kane County woman in her 20s recently died from COVID-19, making her the youngest person in the county to die amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced the woman’s death Monday, along with the death of a Kane County man in his 50s. As of Monday, 464 county residents have died from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, the state’s data shows.

Just 23 of those residents — or about 5 percent — were under the age of 50, including seven in their 30s. Prior to Monday, a 33-year-old Elgin man was the youngest person in the county to die from COVID-19, public health data shows.

More than 60 percent of Kane County residents who died after testing positive for the coronavirus were 75 or older, according to IDPH statistics. About 56 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in Kane County were linked to long-term-care facilities.

Coronavirus deaths are once again on the rise in Kane County after a dip over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The coronavirus pandemic claimed 31 lives in the county during the first week of December, up from 16 over the previous seven-day span, public health data shows.

Coronavirus cases in the county are also starting to rise again after a similar drop over the holiday period. Kane County recorded nearly 2,900 new coronavirus cases during the first seven days of December, up from about 2,400 in the last week of November, according to the state’s data.
