Firefighter Receives Minor Injury Fighting Aurora Building Fire

The fire was unintentionally caused by trespassers who were using the building as a place to sleep.

AURORA, IL — A firefighter was treated for a minor eye injury after a fire broke out in the 1400 block of East New York Street in Aurora Tuesday night.

A bystander called the Aurora Fire Department at around 10:10 p.m. to report the blaze. Crews found a one-story commercial building with heavy smoke showing from the room. 21 firefighters took just under an hour to extinguish the fire, which was located in the basement.

Aurora Fire Investigators said the fire was unintentionally caused by trespassers who were using the building as a place to sleep. The building was vacant and had a partial collapse of the first floor to the basement that was unrelated to the fire and was in this condition prior to firefighters' arrival.

A complete search for reported trapped victims was performed with no victims found. An estimated dollar loss is unavailable at this time due to the deteriorated condition of the building prior to the fire.

One firefighter was treated and released for a minor eye injury.

The building has been turned over to property standards.
