AURORA, IL — A jury found a 48-year-old Aurora man guilty of firing eight shots from a handgun toward an Aurora police car in 2020, officials said.

At about 7:30 p.m. on March 19, 2020, Andres Ramirez stepped outside his residence in the 200 block of Jefferson Street and fired shots in the direction of a marked police car that was driving down the street, according to evidence presented in trial by Assistant State’s Attorneys Lori Anderson and Joe Gay. One bullet hit a house across the street and another hit a parked car.

No one was injured during the shooting, officials said.

At the time, Ramirez was on parole after serving time for a 2003 offense of attempted first-degree murder. He was sentenced to 16.5 years in prison and placed on three years of mandatory supervised release in 2017, officials said.

After a trial by jury, the Kane County State's Attorney's Office charged Ramirez was charged with three felony charges 0f armed violence, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

His next court appearance, for motions and sentencing, is set for 1:30 p.m. June 24 at the Kane County Judicial Center. The Aurora man is looking at a minimum sentence of 20 years at the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to officials.

"I would like to thank everyone at the Aurora Police Department for standing in the line of fire day in and day out in service to the citizens of their city," Assistant State’s Attorney Lori Anderson said in a statement. "This conviction, which ensures that a career criminal will be off the street for a very long time, was made possible by the thorough and professional investigation of the officers involved."

Ramirez — whose address officials cited as being in the 700 block of Second Avenue — will remain in custody at the Kane County jail, where he has been held in lieu of $750,000 bail. At the state's request, Judge David P. Kliment revoked the man's bond upon conviction, officials said.
