Kane Co. Coronavirus Cases Reach 7-Week Lows, But Deaths Spike

Public health data shows there have been less than 80 new cases of the coronavirus each day since May 30.

KANE COUNTY, IL — Public health data shows the number of daily new coronavirus cases in Kane County has reached its lowest tallies since mid-April, but deaths have spiked since the start of June.

According to statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health, 347 residents of the county have tested positive for the coronavirus in June. Forty-four people tested positive June 2, the lowest number of new cases since April 19, when 26 were confirmed, the data shows.

As of Saturday, 6,793 people in Kane County have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to public health data.

Though the statistics may be somewhat affected by the closure of state-run testing facilities in the wake of protests throughout Illinois, public health data shows there have been less than 80 confirmed cases each day since May 30. State officials closed all community-based testing sites — including one at the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora — on June 1-2.

Despite confirmed cases continuing to drop after several large spikes in mid-May, the county has seen a large jump in coronavirus-related deaths since the start of June, the data shows. Thirty-eight people have died due to coronavirus-related conditions so far this month, with 10 deaths reported June 2. As of Saturday, 215 Kane County residents have died from the coronavirus, according to public health data.

The 7-day rolling average of deaths per day — a measure that takes into account daily fluctuations to show longer-term trends — rose to 6 on Saturday after reaching a low of just over 2 at the end of May.
