Man Charged With Robbing Aurora Dollar General At Gunpoint

Police say he came in wearing a mask, holding a gun, and demanding that employees open the safe.

AURORA, IL — An Aurora man faces felony charges after police say they tracked him down following an armed robbery at a Dollar General store Tuesday. Lamar Russell, 26, of the 2300 block of Sunshine Court, is accused of wearing a mask and forcing his was into the back office of the Dollar General at 1033 E. Galena Blvd. Police say Russell then showed a handgun and demanded that the employees retrieve money from the safe.

Russell reportedly did not get access to the safe, but stole the employee's cellphone and fled.

Police say they used the employee's cellphone to track Russell's location after the robbery. He was found shortly after on a path near Haffenrichter Road and Pinecreek Drive, according to a news release.

Police reportedly found a "replica handgun" and the employee's stolen cellphone on Russell.

Rollins Elementary was on a temporary lockdown throughout the incident, but police say there was no immediate danger.

Russell is currently in custody at Kane County Jail.
