Man Charged With Using Pipe To Rob Convenience Store In Aurora

Police say he beat a store employee with a pipe before stealing the employee's gun.

AURORA, IL — A 22-year-old Aurora man with robbing a local convenience store while armed with a pipe on June 30. Police say Clayton Vaughan, of the 900 block of Spruce St., used a pipe to attack a 59-year-old employee of the store before ultimately stealing the employee's gun and leaving.

The incident took place just after 10:30 p.m., police say. According to police, Vaughan entered the store with a pipe and began beating the employee. The employee then got out a handgun, which Vaughan grabbed from them and accidentally fired at the ceiling, police say.

Vaughan then "gained control of the gun" before fleeing the scene, according to police.

After an investigation that involved reviewing surveillance footage and reaching out to the public for help, police identified Vaughan as the suspect of the armed robbery. He was arrested by Geneva Police on July 11 and taken into custody.

Vaughan is currently being held in Kane County Jail on $850,000 bond.
