Man Cuts Own Throat After Fleeing Cops In Aurora: Police

Police say the man escaped while handcuffed and then used a knife to cut his own neck.

AURORA, IL — Aurora police say a 26-year-old man attempted to take his own life after he fled police custody while handcuffed Wednesday. Police found the man, who was on parole for armed robbery, in the back of a car holding a knife and bleeding heavily from the neck after he fled.

Police are not disclosing the man's name yet because charges are currently pending.

Aurora police initially stopped the man for a traffic violation in the 1000 block of Molitor Rd. around 2:30 p.m. They then handcuffed the suspect, but he then got away and fled on foot, according to a news release.

About a half hour later, police pulled over a car that they had seen pulling into and out of driveways nearby. Police say they found the man in the backseat of the car bleeding from the neck.

The suspect was allegedly able to move the handcuffs to the front of his body and had cut his neck. Officers were able to get the suspect to drop the knife and pull him from the vehicle.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.
