North Aurora, Batavia Girls Head To DC To Talk Gun Violence

The girls were invited by Rep. Lauren Underwood to share their stories outside of the Capitol building.

NORTH AURORA, IL — Two female students from North Aurora and Batavia recently had an opportunity to visit Washington D.C. to rally for gun control. Mary Horn, a high school senior from North Aurora and Maggie Hirschauer, 10, of Batavia were invited by Rep. Lauren Underwood (D, IL-14) to share their stories about gun violence at a press conference outside of the United States Capitol Building Thursday.

Horn talked about how she was on lockdown at North Aurora High School during the deadly Feb. 15 shooting at Henry Pratt Manufacturing. Hirschauer, who wrote a letter to Rep. Underwood about shooter drills shared her own personal experiences practicing active shooter drills in school.

The local students were joined by Rep. Underwood and other lawmakers from across the country, in addition to experienced school nurses.

Underwood, who is also a nurse and a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, organized the press conference to shed light on the anxieties and realities faced by students and school nurses across the U.S.
