Underwood's 'Lower Insulin Costs Now' Act Becomes Law

The law helps lower insulin costs by making generic insulin available sooner.

WASHINGTON, DC — A bill that will help make generic insulin available more quickly has been signed into law by President Trump. The Lower Insulin Costs Now Bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Lauren Underwood (D, IL-14), extends the cutoff date for reviewing applications for generic insulin beyond 2020, according to a news release on Underwood's website.

Under the Lower Insulin Costs Now Act, the FDA will continue reviewing applications beyond the cutoff date. In a statement, Underwood said, "Over the past two decades, the cost of insulin has skyrocketed—it’s unaffordable. I've heard from countless families in our community about the hard decisions they make to afford their insulin, including rationing their supply or going without. This is unacceptable—over 7 million Americans rely on insulin to survive."

The bipartisan legislation was also sponsored by Jan Schakowsky (D, IL-09), Brett Guthrie (R, KY-02), and Mike Kelly (R, PA-16).
