AURORA, IL — A Cicero woman has been sentenced to eight months of "periodic imprisonment" for driving her SUV drunk and landing in a retention pond in Aurora in October 2017, the Chicago Tribune reports. Gladys Ruvira-Garcia, 32, had a BAC of .138 at the time of the crash, which left her 6-year-old son with permanent brain damage.

Ruvira-Garcia's son was in a medically induced coma in the aftermath of the crash, which took place near I-88 and Diehl Road. Ruvira-Garcia and the other people in the SUV were able to get out of the car safely; emergency crews rescued her son from beneath 15 feet of water.

At her sentencing, Ruvira-Garcia gave a brief statement in which she apologized for the tragedy — but did not mention her injured child, according to the Tribune.

“It’s astonishing to the court that (the child’s) name didn’t come out of the defendant’s mouth once during her statement … to the court,” DuPage County Judge Liam Brennan Brennan said, adding he was tempted to sentence her to prison.

Ruvira-Garcia will be permitted to leave prison during work hours throughout the week, but must return to prison after work and on the weekends.
