WWII Vet, Aurora Native Turns 100 On Super Bowl Sunday

The 100-year-old Auroran credits his exercise routine as being the key to living a long life, city officials said.

AURORA, IL — A World War II veteran and Aurora native joined the Centenarian Club on Super Bowl Sunday.

Ray Moore, who was born Feb. 12, 1923, celebrated his 100th birthday Sunday with family, friends and fans, according to city officials.

To honor him, Mayor Richard Irvin issued a proclamation designating Feb. 12 "Ray Moore Day" in his hometown. Deputy Mayor Memo Trujillo presented Moore with the declaration during his birthday celebrations.

Moore enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1942 and flew 29 strategic missions. After, he returned to Aurora and spent 40 years working for the Burlington Railroad. He and his wife, Dolores, raised their four children on the city's east side.

When asked by city officials if he had any more secrets to a long life, More said, "Yes, always look both ways before you cross the street." The 100-year-old Auroran, who still drives and takes care of his property, credits his exercise routine as being the key to living a long life, said Clayton Muhammad, the city's chief communications officer.
