7th Annual Charity Chess Tournament

Join the efforts by Chess Without Borders to support amazing social entrepreneurial projects by entering to play chess or sharing a meal on

On Feb 28th 2015 Chess Without Borders will host a special chess tournament where 100% of the proceeds will be donated to 2 charities started 7 years ago by Nina Sethi, an alum of District 220. Nina was volunteering as a teacher in the slums of India at Project Why when she met Meher who was severley burned as an infant. Nina was shocked that there was no help for Meher. Nina asked Chess Without Borders to help raise funds for her medical treatment. A group of students came together to raise funds for her through hosting chess tournaments. District 220 Teacher Maggie Gruber even travelled to Delhi, India to visit Meher and a plan was executed. Dr Rakesh Khazanchi a talented Plastic Surgeon donated his services for Meher by performing surgery on her face and hands. Later Barrington students Austen Murrow, her grandmother and Sujit Johnston also travelled to India and a relationship began evolving with the children at Project Why and Barrington. Students here transformed themselves into social entrepreneurs and have established 8 computers there to bring computer literacy to 300 students from the slums of Delhi at Project Why. Watch a video of the computer center at: https://www.youtube.com/watchv=vmyDix4rvT0D. This video will be screened at the White House Film Festival this year.

This chess tournament will donate 100% of its proceeds to the education of Meher and the Maggie Gruber Computer Center. You can help by playing in the tournament or joining us for a meal or buying a raffle ticket. Many prestigious honors and awards have come to our community and our students because of the creative efforts they have mobilized in order to make opportunities possible for other children across the world.
