Car Crash Preceded Fatal Metra Train Collision In Barrington: Coroner

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A Carpentersville man died Friday night after the vehicle he was driving was struck by a train following a three-vehicle crash in Barrington, authorities said.

Barrington police and firefighters responded at about 11:45 a.m. to Route 14 and Hart Road for a report of a crash involving a train. A preliminary investigation determined a three-vehicle crash had occurred and one of the vehicles came to rest on the railroad tracks. The vehicle was unable to move before it was struck by the train, police said.

The driver, who was identified as 77-year-old Robert Scheurich of Carpentersville, was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital with critical injuries. Despite treatment, Scheurich died Friday night in the hospital's intensive care unit.

An autopsy was performed Monday, and preliminary results indicated Scheurich died from blunt-force injuries sustained in the crash.

The Barrington Police Department is investigating the initial three-vehicle crash, while the Metra Police Department is investigating the subsequent train crash.
