Haunted History of White Cemetery

Barrington is home to one of the most notorious haunted locations in the Chicago area: White Memorial Cemetery on Cuba Road. 

For years, the cemetery, which dates back to the 1820s, has been a source of ghost stories and haunts.   The spooky tales are so well known that they've been published in several books, including More Chicago Haunts By Ursula Bielski. 

In the book, Bielski describes an array of ghost stories stemming from the cemetery.

"The bizarre phenomena of White Cemetery are immesurable.  A vast array of wonders has been reported by visitors to this site, including the sound of leaves crunching under invisible feet and tombstones toppling for no apparent reason," (157).

According to More Chicago Haunts, the most common haunting at the cemetery is the sighting of white orbs of light that appear over tombstones, then disappear into thin air. 

Cuba Road itself is also said to be extremely haunted.  Over the years, many people have reported seeing a ghost woman who wanders the road. 

"Whoever this woman is, she is not alone on Cuba; translucent cars piloted by invisible drivers motor past, sometimes turning into White Cemetery and disappearing," (Bielski, 158).

Due to the cemetery's haunted reputation, vandalism is a common occurrence, especially in October.  Security will be monitoring the cemetery this weekend.
