Math Problems Solved at New Learning Center

When it comes to homework, math can be a daunting task for many students. A new learning center in Barrington is focused on helping students understand and enjoy what could be a very scary subject.

Mathnasium opened at 117 E. Northwest Highway at the end of November. The math only learning center offers help for students who need to catch up in class, and also provides assistance for students who want to get ahead.

 “We’re not a tutoring center. A tutor would sit and help a child with their homework, and when that’s done, they send them on their way,” Center Director Warren Arnold said. “What we do is help with homework but our main goal is to help them catch up and fill in any gaps in learning that they’ve had.”

Based in Los Angeles, Mathnasium has more than 200 franchises throughout the U.S. They offer math help to kids as young as four years old, and cater to students taking courses as advanced as calculus. Arnold said Mathnasium chose the Barrington location because parents who live here are invested in their children’s education.

“We felt it was a good area where people are willing and able to give their kids the extra help that they need to excel in math,” he said.

Mathasium’s most popular program is the monthly membership. A flat fee includes an individualized learning plan and unlimited access to the center and its teachers. The center also gives parents progress reports and follow-up assessments every three months.

Arnold finds joy in helping students achieve their goals and find confidence in the classroom.

“The main thing is that students are no longer afraid to do their math homework. They find that it can be very empowering to know how to figure out an answer to a tough problem,” Arnold said.
