Caregiver Dementia Group Focuses On Holiday Alcohol Consumption

Smith Village offers tips for handling family members with dementia's requests for alcohol during the holidays from Tuesday, Oct. 15.

CHICAGO — Managing alcohol consumption for persons with dementia can be particularly challenging during festive occasions, such as holiday parties. Striking a balance between respecting people’s preferences and ensuring their safety is essential.

When a family member struggling with dementia requests an alcoholic beverage at a family celebration, caregivers should weigh several important factors. They include the type and amount of alcohol, potential interactions with medications, and how alcohol may affect another’s behavior or memory. Before a party, you might ask the hostess to offer non-alcoholic alternatives that replicate the appearance, taste and experience of drinking a cocktail as a thoughtful way to include those with memory challenges in celebrations without compromising their well-being.

This important topic will be discussed at the next Caregiver Support Group meeting starting at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Smith Village, 2320 West 113th Place, Chicago. These meetings, which take place on the third Tuesday of every month, provide a safe space for caregivers to share experiences and explore strategies for supporting loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
