Cops Offer Tips For Businesses To Avoid Becoming Burglary Victims

Here's a few things business owners can do to help prevent burglaries.

CHICAGO — The Chicago Police Department is helping local businesses avoid becoming victims of burglaries that usually occur during closing hours. The following tips were shared by police in the city's 22nd District after it was reported that three businesses along Western Avenue were targeted in recent days by a thief who gained entry overnight by tossing a piece of concrete through the front window.

  • Have a working alarm system in your business
  • Keep a minimal amount of lights illuminated in your business during closing hours
  • Keep cash hidden and secure while business is closed
  • Consider installing video surveillance on the inside and outside of your property
  • Maintain proper lighting over all entrances to your business
  • Be aware of this crime and notify other businesses
  • Call 911 immediately and provide a detailed description of any suspicious people including any vehicle description and license plate information
