Edna White Community Garden in Morgan Park hosts “Green Friday”

McGrath family will pay tribute to the memory of Carol McGrath, who, along with her husband Pat donated the Peanuts gallery in 2020.

The Edna White Community Garden in Morgan Park hosts “Green Friday” November 29th decorating the community garden for Christmas, complete with life-size Peanuts Christmas characters and Nutcracker soldiers ideal for family photos.

Organizers of the Edna White Community Garden are offering an alternative to Black Friday shopping madness with decorations, music, warm refreshments, s’mores by the fire and a chance to create holiday card photos.

Pat Rigg Photography is donating the use of her Santa sleigh for staging. Part of the proceeds of Riggs professional photos benefits the Edna White Garden. Families are encouraged to take their own family photos with Peanuts characters and create random shots around the decorated garden spots.

The McGrath family of Morgan Park will attend and pay tribute to the memory of Carol McGrath, who, along with her husband Pat donated the Peanuts gallery to the Edna White Garden in 2020. Carol died November 6th surrounded by family after a courageous battle against cancer. The McGrath family will light up the garden at approximately 4:30 p.m.

“Carol would have liked that,” said Pat.

Carol McGrath was a trusted friend in the community and a coveted caretaker of pre-school children for community parents challenged with balancing work and school schedules. Many a child enjoyed the fun and activities in the McGrath home over the years under Carol’s careful watch and tender care.

Only four years ago did Carol begin looking for a new home for the Peanuts Christmas figures and life-size Nutcracker Soldiers that graced her front lawn every Christmas at 109th and Bell.

In the early fall of 2020, the McGraths donated Halloween figurines that provided a subtle transition in the season with the departure of large cutouts of butterflies, lady bugs, insects and other larger than life decorations.

“Carol loved Christmas,” said Figel. “Her family set up the Christmas tree in the house some time back for her to enjoy.”
