Chicago, IL, June 14, 2016 -- Jacob Manning Schmitz, a junior at Brother Rice High School, passed away June 13 after a valiant struggle with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia.
Jacob was the only son and child of retired CPD Deputy Chief Leo Schmitz, who is now director of the Illinois State Police, and retired CPD Lt. Ellyn Weiss Schmitz.

During his sophomore year, Jacob participated in the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s “Get Behind the Vest Drive”

at Brother Rice, where students raised money to buy bullet-resistant vests for Chicago police officers.
