Murph's Gift of Music Fundraiser Nov. 7

The 4th Murph's Gift of Music fundraising event will be held November 7 at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park from 3–8 p.m.

The 4th Murph’s Gift of Music fundraising event will be held November 7 at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park from 3–8 p.m. All ages are encouraged to come enjoy live music from Coyote Riot, A Week Back and Friends, and The Larkin and Moran Brothers. Basket raffles, silent auctions and a grand raffle will be available and food, beer and wine will be served. To purchase tickets in advance, please visit the Murph’s Gift of Music website.

The event will benefit The Michael J. Murphy Scholarship Music Fund, an award that provides music and dance lessons as well as instruments to children from families that do not have the financial means for this opportunity. Since the Fund began in 2009, over 200 talented young musicians and dancers have been able continue their passions with the help of this scholarship.

Michael Murphy (Murph) devoted his life to music. A guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Murph played in four bands, all of which circulated through a variety of venues, pubs, and festivals throughout the Chicagoland area and beyond. His band Leave had released three albums, gaining widespread respect and praise.

Murph also taught at the Music School in Oak Lawn. He encouraged all to participate in music. His life and lessons were cut short on June 6, 2008 when he was killed by a hit and run driver.

The Michael J. Murphy Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that holds the belief that music can inspire everyone. Entering its fifth year, the Fund continues the mission to provide music related lessons and instruments to children from families that do not have the financial means to provide this opportunity. Backed by the tireless efforts of the Board of Directors, and the support of local businesses, individual donations, and a host volunteers who donate their time and effort, the Fund has awarded over 200 scholarships to help nurture the talents of young musicians, dancers and singers in the Southwest Chicagoland area. The application process is open each year from February 1 through April 15. Each award consists of up to 30 private lessons and an instrument if needed.
