Saint Xavier University Football Player Killed In I-80 Crash With Semi

CHICAGO — Saint Xavier University is mourning the unexpected loss of one of its football players over the weekend. Mason Santiago, 19, died in a crash on I-80, along with his friend, Tyler Koscinski, 20. The young men were from New Lenox.

Santiago played linebacker for the Saint Xavier Cougars. The sophomore was studying sports communication.

The two were traveling on I-80 West between LaGrange Road and Harlem Avenue, when their Dodge SUV collided with a semi. Both were pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m. Sunday. The crash is still under investigation, Illinois State Police said.

SXU students learned of Santiago’s death in a community email from President Keith Elder.

"It is with profound grief that I share news of the unexpected loss of SXU student-athlete Mason Santiago," Elder said. "Mason was a sophomore studying sports communication and a cherished member of the SXU football team.”

Mason Santiago, 19

The university counseling center was being made available for students seeking grief resources, as well as campus ministry. Students and staff can call 773-298-4045 or request services online.

"The SXU Cougar football family is shocked and absolutely devastated by the passing of Mason Santiago,” Coach Mike Feminis. “It’s just impossible to wrap your head around something like this. He was such a good kid, so well liked by his teammates and coaches. Our deepest condolences go out to Mason’s family and loved ones."

Prior to coming to Saint Xavier, Santiago played as a linebacker/defensive back for the Providence High School Celtics, leading them to the Class 4A title game in 2022; the team finished as runner-up.
