Smith Village Caregiver Support Group Focuses On Avoiding Arguments

Smith Village's monthly caregiver support group will focus on avoiding arguments with loved ones suffering from dementia Tuesday, April 16.

CHICAGO — Arguing with someone who has dementia can cause frustration for everyone. Caregivers can learn how to respond to their loved one’s emotions, provide reassurance and redirect attention to avoid senseless arguments during the Caregiver Support Group Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at Smith Village. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. at 2320 W. 113th Place, Chicago.

The support group provides a confidential, safe and supportive environment and aims to combat the isolation many caregivers experience. Meetings are planned for the third Tuesday of every month.

“There is a temptation to constantly correct a loved one, who may be confused, or to spend time trying to convince them you’re right. That is counterproductive,” says group leader Alice Keane. “It is far more rewarding to acknowledge another’s statement or emotional response with care. Then, move on.”
