Smith Village Helps Caregivers Connect With Those Living With Dementia
Learning non-verbal clues can help caregivers connect with those suffering from dementia at Smith Village's caregiver support group Oct. 17.
CHICAGO — Learning how to read nonverbal cues revealing the mood and preferences of a loved one living with dementia can help caregivers stay positive and improve communication.
Join the Caregiver Support Group at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Smith Village, 2320 West 113th Place, Chicago. This support group provides a confidential, safe and supportive environment and aims to combat the isolation many caregivers experience. Meetings are planned for the third Tuesday of every month.
“When you watch nonverbal cues to gauge the emotional status of your loved one, you can adapt your communication to their needs,” says Alice Keane, group leader. “There are a variety of ways to connect, depending on the progression of your loved one’s dementia. Even a kind touch or simple acknowledgement of their feelings can make a difference.”
