Smith Village Support Group Focuses On Communication Strategies

Smith Village's monthly caregiver support group will focus on communicating with loved ones suffering from dementia Tuesday, July 16.

CHICAGO — As language becomes increasingly difficult for someone with dementia, it helps to understand how the progression of the disease changes a person’s ability to understand the spoken word. Facilitators will share techniques caregivers can use to keep communication positive and productive at the Smith Village Caregiver Support Group.

The Caregivers Support Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at Smith Village, 2320 W. 113th Place, Chicago. The group provides a confidential, safe and supportive space that aims to combat the isolation many caregivers experience.

“Being patient is key,” says group leader Keane. “Pay attention to your own tone of voice, facial expressions and even posture and assess your loved one’s current disposition before you talk. There also are practical techniques to avoid such as getting enmeshed in unnecessary arguments that make a huge difference.”
