Unlocked Cars Targeted In Beverly Thefts

Thieves who target unlocked cars looking for valuables have hit up streets in Beverly this week.

CHICAGO, IL -- Thieves who check car door handles to see if they are unlocked and then take items from inside if they are have been hitting up the Beverly neighborhood, according to an alert from the Chicago Police Department's 22nd District. Recent incidents have all occurred overnight between midnight and 7 a.m. and have occurred on blocks throughout the neighborhood.

District 22 has reported five such incidents in a two-say span earlier this week. On Tuesday, the offender or offenders walked down streets in the 9300 block of S. Bell, 9700 block of S. Oakley, 9600 block of S. Seeley and 9600 block of S. Longwood and committed the crimes. On Wednesday morning, incidents were reported in the 9600 block of S. Winchester.

Chicago police have issued the following tips to neighborhood residents in hopes of preventing similar crimes from occurring in the future:

• Always remember to lock your vehicle at all times

• Do not keep anything of value in your vehicle that can be viewed from the outside, especially portable GPS units, cell phone chargers, purses, briefcases or loose change

• Park your car in a secure garage or well-lit area

• Consider installing an audible alarm in your vehicle

• Be aware of this situation and alert neighbors in the area about this crime

• Call 911 immediately and provide a detailed description of any suspicious people, including any vehicle description and license plate information
