Charges Pending For Man Who Shot Bolingbrook Officer: Police

Officials said Monday the officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — A 24-year-old was taken into custody early Monday, after he fired multiple shots at a police officer, striking him twice, according to a news release from Bolingbrook Police.

Bolingbrook Police first responded to a complaint of theft at 6:14 p.m. on Sunday at a business in the 100 block of South Bolingbrook Drive. The thief fled before officers arrived, and wasn't immediately found, police said.

Then, at 7:48 p.m., police responded to the same business for the report of shots fired. Police said it was found that the offender from the earlier theft complaint had fired multiple shots at the business.

The offender was then located at his home on West Briarcliff Road, police said.

"Upon the officer making contact with the individual, the offender fired multiple shots at the officer, striking the officer twice. The offender then barricaded himself in the residence," Bolingbrook Chief Mike Rompa said in a video posted by the Village of Bolingbrook.

The officer was taken to the hospital, and is expected to recover, Rompa said.

The Illinois State Police Tactical Response Team was requested to assist with the incident. A search warrant was signed by Judge Gomora, which was executed at the home by the Illinois State Police at 1 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

Victor Zarate, 24, was taken into custody at his home without incident, according to police.

The Illinois State Police are conducting the investigation, Rompa said. Charges are pending in conjunction with Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow’s office.

As of Monday afternoon, the Will County State's Attorney's Office said this remains under active investigation, and the office is working closely with investigators.
