Bitter Chicago winter temperatures bring out the familiar aches and pains, coughing, sniffles, fevers and sneezing that come with colds this time of year. On average, Americans get three colds per year. To fend off the sniffles this season, here are some tips to help keep you healthy.
1. Wash your hands frequently. Most colds are spread by direct contact. Besides washing your hands at the obvious times, remember to wash them after you go out to stores and public places. Washing your hands for at least 15 seconds – with a good lather – will help to kill germs. Similarly, avoid touching your face throughout the day to keep germs at bay.
2. Get plenty of sleep. When you’re exhausted, your body does not have the energy to fight off colds as well. Sleeping at least 7-8 hours a night allows your body to repair itself and maintain a strong immune system.

4. Get active. While it’s tempting to skip workouts during winter months, research shows that those who work out are less prone to getting colds. Regular exercise will also increase your energy levels and allow you to sleep better.

5. Eat healthy. While the cold weather can make you cling to comfort food, eating an ample amount of fruits and vegetables is critical to increasing your ability to ward off colds. Incorporate at least 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables into your day.
6. Drink plenty of water. Proper hydration flushes out your system and strengthens your immune system. Drink at least 8 glasses of water to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.
7. Keep surfaces clean. Doorknobs, light switches, remote controls, telephones, keyboards and countertops are central hubs that can harbor viruses. Cleaning them with a disinfectant on a regular basis will help keep you protected.
