Author Diane Setterfield, of "The Thirteenth Tale," makes Chicago debut at Vernon Area Library

New York Times bestselling author Diane Setterfield visits the Vernon Area Public Library on Tuesday, November 19 at 1 p.m. Setterfield will share her much anticipated book, “Bellman & Black: A Ghost Story,” a mysterious tale about the naïve actions of a young boy, and how they haunt him for his adult life.
Setterfield is a British author whose 2006 debut novel, “The Thirteenth Tale,” quickly soared to the New York Times bestseller list. Her fans have waited seven years to read more from this highly acclaimed author with a unique, gothic writing style.
“Bellman & Black” tells the story of William Bellman, who as a young boy recklessly aims his slingshot at a rook resting on a branch, killing the bird instantly. It is a small but cruel act, and is soon forgotten. By the time he is grown, with a wife and children of his own, William seems to have put the whole incident behind him. But when a stranger mysteriously enters William’s life, his fortunes begin to turn—and the unforeseen consequences of his past indiscretion take root. In a desperate bid to save the only precious thing he has left, he enters into a rather strange bargain and founds a decidedly macabre business.
