The Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program grant is intended for the 2024 federal fiscal year.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The Buffalo Grove Police Department will be able to increase traffic safety enforcement efforts next year thanks to a grant from the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program. The STEP grant totals $50,531.40, with the program running from Oct. 1, 2023 through Sept. 30, 2024.
"We're pleased to receive this grant to step up our road safety efforts with the goal of saving lives," Sergeant Tony Turano said. "Our mission is to make travel safer through directed, proactive patrols and to stop, cite and/or arrest those who choose to violate traffic laws."
The STEP grant is funded by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The program focuses on high-visibility enforcement and strategies aimed at saving lives and preventing injuries by reducing traffic crashes.

With the grant money, the BGPD said it will conduct additional enforcement efforts "to supplement mandatory and optional campaign enforcement dates scheduled during some of the deadliest times of the year."
The efforts will focus on the leading causes of crashes including speeding, impaired driving, electronic device use, failure to yield and disobeying traffic control signals, as well as occupant restraint violations.
