District 214 Raises Over $70,000 for Pediatric Cancer Research

            High School District 214 students and staff raised more than $70,000 for pediatric cancer research last month. During the annual St. Baldrick’s Day head-shaving events, several buildings also set new school records.

            Elk Grove High School set a new fundraising record that resulted in $20,268 collected. More than 60 students shaved their heads, including at least five female students—Suheoll Diaz, Brianna Gomez, Stephanie Schrager, Jennifer Tan, and McKenzie Vetter—and two female faculty members—Alexa Rodheim and Rita Sayre.

            John Hersey High School raised $20,201 breaking its previous record of $15,389 set in 2009. More than 114 heads were shaved, including            Hersey Choir Director Sara Michael who raised more than half the total amount collected. Four female students—Ally Hembd, Jackie Stassen, Katie Abernathy, Fawn Bruzan—also had their heads shaved.

             In only its second year raising funds for pediatric cancer cure, Buffalo Grove High School raised more than $18,667. Student Christina Lazaro shaved her head and donated the hair to Locks of Love. Staff member Karen Stoltz also had her head shaved and was the top fundraiser with more than $2,510 raised.

            The Forest View Alternative School celebrated its best year ever when it raised more than $10,000. Former Vanguard student Katlyn Marie became a shavee in memory of Sabrina Cuevas, who lost a courageous battle with cancer. Approximately 135 people shaved their heads or donated hair.

            Prospect High School raised $4,000, its highest total in four years. More than 30 students and staff had their heads shaved or received extension weaves.
