Felon Found With Loaded Gun During Stop: Buffalo Grove Police Blotter

During a traffic stop, police found a stolen handgun loaded with 16 rounds of ammunition.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The following information comes from the Buffalo Grove Police Department (except when noted) and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced.

Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF A WEAPON BY A FELON

Shavez D. Jones, 34, of the 700 block of E. Pennsylvania Drive, Palatine, is accused of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, illegal possession of ammunition without a valid FOID card, and was arrested at 11:18 p.m. July 20, in the 1300 block of Lake Cook Road. Police saw a car Jones was driving with heavily tinted windows and then watched it make an improper turn. During a traffic stop, police found a stolen handgun loaded with 16 rounds of ammunition. Jones was also cited for the tinted windows and the improper turn. Bond was set at $20,000 with a court date of July 21 assigned.

DRIVING WHILE LICENSE SUSPENDED/REVOKED

Malchus T. Ervin, 43, of the 1200 block of N. Village Drive, Round Lake Beach, is accused of driving on a suspended license, and was arrested at 12:35 a.m. July 22, in the 800 block of Weidner Court. He was also cited for having an expired registration. He was released on a $2,500 bond and was assigned a court date of Aug. 19.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

  • Felix A. Perez-Zetina, 30, of the 2000 block of N. Ginger Creek Drive, Palatine, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or more, operating an uninsured vehicle, driving 21-25 mph above the speed limit, improper traffic lane usage, illegal possession of liquor by a driver, and was arrested at 11:55 p.m. July 23, at Dundee Parkway and Golfview Terrace. He was released after posting bond and was assigned a court date of Aug. 10.
  • Charles D. Adkins, 51, of the 180 block of Sycamore Drive, Hawthorn Woods, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, and was arrested at 4 p.m. July 24, at Woodman's Grocery, 1500 block of E. Deerfield Parkway. Police responded to Woodman's for a report of an intoxicated person sleeping in a vehicle. Adkins was released after posting a $3,000 bond and was assigned a court date of Aug. 10.

INCIDENTS

DRIVING WHILE LICENSE SUSPENDED/REVOKED

A 28-year-0ld Wheeling resident was cited for driving with a suspended license at 11:18 a.m. July 20, at W. Dundee and N. Arlington Heights roads. Police originally pulled the driver over for speeding (49 mph in a 35 mph zone), before learning their license was suspended. They were brought to police headquarters.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY

A resident in the 100 block of Forest Place reported a burglary at their home on July 20. The resident said an unknown male came to the home and offered to do yard work. The suspect then escorted the victim to the backyard and stayed there for about 30 minutes to discuss what work could be done. The suspect was also talking to someone on a phone in a language other than English. The suspect told the victim he would be in contact regarding a quote for the work, and left the property. Later, the resident noticed the home was burglarized during the conversation. Personal items were taken from the home.

THEFT

A resident in the 900 block of Greenridge Road called police at 1:04 p.m. July 22, to report they were doing lawn work and left their Red Toro Smartstow lawn mower, valued at $650, near the curb with the yard waste bin. They went inside briefly, and when they returned, the mower was going. He proceeded to check with the recycling company that driving in the area, his neighbors and drove around trying to locate it, but was unsuccessful.

FIRE

Police responded at 4:40 a.m. July 23, to a report of a house fire in the 0-20 block of River Oaks Circle E. Police discovered fire coming from the roof of the home. CRIMINAL TRESPASS TO VEHICLE

A resident in the 600 block of Lyon Court reported at 1:37 a.m. July 25, two people were going through his vehicle in the last five minutes. They opened the vehicle doors and were going through the vehicle. They ran away when the resident turned on the alarm. Police found a backpack laying on the ground in front of the home. The owner of the backpack was later identified as a nearby resident who also had a criminal trespass complaint for his vehicle. Nothing appeared missing from the car in the 600 block of Lyon Court.

BURGLARY TO MOTOR VEHICLE

A resident in the 500 block of Lyon Court called police at 1:51 a.m. July 25, to report an attempted motor vehicle theft. The resident said they saw someone flee from their 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a bike. The person was dressed in khaki pants, a black-hooded sweatshirt and was last seen heading south on Lyon Drive, turning east on LaSalle Lane. The resident said they were awake in the house when they heard the vehicle's horn go off. Looking out the window, they found that the vehicle had been backed down the driveway toward the street. The contents of the glove compartment and center console were strewn about the interior of the vehicle.

MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT

A resident in the 600 block of Lyon Court reported at 6:15 a.m. July 25, their car had been stolen from the driveway. The resident said they had left the keys inside the unlocked vehicle when they had parked in the prior day. The vehicle was recovered in Zion. An investigation is ongoing.
