Latest developments in Cystic Fibrosis Discussion

The Cystic Fibrosis Institute (CFI) will hold a special seminar on August 25, for families touched by cystic fibrosis (CF). This seminar will be held at Pinstripes, located at 1150 Willow Road in Northbrook, starting at 9:30 a.m.  The session is the most recent of a quarterly series of talks covering topics of practical importance in the lives of those affected by cystic fibrosis.  Prior dinners covered topics that include from cystic fibrosis for the newly diagnosed to job hunting for those with CF.

“Our main goal is to address topics that are of every day importance to those in the trenches,” said CFI Founder and director, Steven Boas, MD.  “There are plenty of opportunities for formal teaching and lectures. However, our series covers practical topics and includes good discussion, and great food!”  The informal format is designed to allow for easy discussion and idea sharing among those who attend.

While professionals frequently are invited to attend as moderators or experts, most events involve more participant discussion than lecture.  Dr. Boas added, “It’s really for those affected by CF – individuals, their families and their friends – who have the most knowledge to share at these events. CFI just sets up the venue.”

This event will include Pinstripes’ Sunday buffet as participants involve themselves in discussions about new and exciting CF research on the horizon, new ideas about current medications and therapies, and the latest views regarding hot CF topics like infection control.

There is no fee to attend, however reservations must be made in advance. For more information about this or other CFI events – or to become involved, contact CFI at (847)998-3434.  As seats fill quickly, there will be no onsite admissions without prior registration.

Cystic Fibrosis is a common genetic condition affecting approximately 30,000 children, adolescents, and adults in the United States.  The abnormal gene in CF results in the production of thick and sticky mucous which can affect multiple body systems, including the lungs and digestive systems. In the lungs, this leads to chronic infections, difficulty breathing and loss of lung function. Not long ago, many individuals with cystic fibrosis failed to live to adolescence, however advances in medicine has led to improved survival and those with the disease can now expect to live into adulthood.
