Children and adults were not wearing masks at a toddler birthday party; Racist graffiti and a swastika discovered: Buffalo Grove Blotter.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The following information comes from the Buffalo Grove Police Department and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced.

Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Caren Drive resident reported at 9:17 a.m. June 3 that there was a false unemployment claim made in their name and sent to previous and current employers. Human resources told the resident to contact police.
  • A Patton Drive resident called police at 6:29 p.m. June 1 to report recently receiving letters from two separate banks saying their request to open credit cards had been denied. The resident stated that they had not been trying to open any credit cards recently. They put a freeze and fraud alert on their credit and was advised to also fill out a police report.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO VEHICLE

  • A resident in the 600 block of Hapsfield Lane called police at 12:52 p.m. May 31 to report their vehicle has been getting keyed since the beginning of April. When they returned from a walk on this date, they noticed two new scratch marks on their vehicle's passenger side front fender. The resident believes a neighbor is the person damaging the vehicle due to ongoing issues regarding noise. The neighbor denied the accusation.
  • A resident in the 2000 block of Millbrook Drive reported at 11:07 a.m. June 2 that their car was damaged in the morning. The rear passenger window was shattered and there appeared to be a small hole in the top center of the window where the cracks radiated away. It does not appear the car was entered. A security guard that monitors a camera overlooking the outside of the building told police the camera wasn't working properly and didn't see anyone near the car.

  • While on patrol, an officer observed at 11:52 a.m. May 31 what appeared to be black spray-painted graffiti on building in Plaza Verde, 1401 W Dundee Road. The spray paint did not appear fresh, and there was nobody around it. The officer contacted building management.
  • A person called police at 11:26 a.m. June 1 to report spray-painted graffiti found on the interior of the retention pipe at Lion's Park, 739 Weidner Road. The graffiti included racial slurs, a swastika and another unknown symbol. A work order was filed with Buffalo Grove Public Works.

PUBLIC COMPLAINT

Police responded to a complaint at 11:22 a.m. May 31 of a violation of the state's order on gatherings at Devonshire Road. Upon arrival, police observed cars parked on both sides of the street. There was an Icee truck parked at the end of the driveway and a person was passing out treats to approximately 20 adults and 20 kids. While some adults were wearing masks and practicing social distancing, others were not. The owner of the home said it was a birthday party for toddlers. The resident thought people would grab their treats and leave. They were informed of the violation and apologized.

ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY

A resident in the 1200 block of Farnsworth Lane reported at 8:35 a.m. June 2 the glass from their front storm door had been shattered. They said they had heard a crash sound and investigated. A landscaping company said they had just been in the area mowing the lawn and could have kicked a rock up from the mower, and struck the door. Nothing suspicious was observed and there were no signs of attempted forced entry.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT

A resident in the 300 block of Rosewood Avenue called police at 9:27 a.m. June 1 to report over the last two weeks, two men had come to their home saying they were there to paint the house. The resident said they never contacted anyone to paint the house and it was actually for sale. The first man had a photo of the home and left without incident. The second man stopped by when the resident wasn't there, talked to a neighbor and left. The resident is concerned someone is using the photo online as part of a scam. The resident said they would call 911 if another painter showed up.

DISTURBANCE

A delivery driver for Amazon called police at 1:02 p.m. June 3 to report a customer in the 1200 block of E Deerfield Parkway had been verbally abusive repeatedly. They said the customer had screamed at them several times for no reason.

VANDALISM

  • The property manager for Villa Verde Condos, 1300 block of W Dundee Road, reported at 10:05 a.m. May 30 the letters KKK spray-painted on the rear wall of the complex. The property manager was contacted by police.
  • A maintenance employee at Cooper Middle School, 1050 Plum Grove Circle called police at 1:11 p.m. June 3 to report someone had spray-painted "Justice 4 GF" in the front parking lot. Someone also spray-painted the same message off of the Plum Grove entrance. Security video shows the first act being done, but doesn't have a time stamp.

THEFT OF LABOR

A person called police at 9:24 a.m. June 4 to report a man threw out two garbage bags into a dumpster within the shopping center parking lot in the 1600 block of N Buffalo Grove Road and was not authorized to do so. The person confronted the man and the latter left.

NEIGHBORHOOD TROUBLE

  • A resident in the 100 block of Wildflower Circle called police at 7:59 p.m. June 4 to report a dispute between neighbors. The resident stated the neighbors were arguing loudly and making banging noises. The resident said it had been happening all day and had been an ongoing issue for years. They also told police that one of the neighbors was smoking marijuana in the garage. The neighbors told police that the resident bothers them about the noise level on a regular basis and contributes to the conflict. They agreed to be mindful of the noise level and not smoke in the garage.
  • A resident in the 400 block of E Dundee Road reported at 7:27 p.m. June 3 of an ongoing issue with a neighbor accusing them and their extended family members of noise and nuisance issues. The neighbor accused a family member of the resident of spitting onto the balcony. The resident believes these claims are racially motivated. Police witnessed the neighbors engaged in a yelling match upon arrival. Both were advised to seek a resolution to the dispute with the homeowner's association.

CUSTOMER/MANAGEMENT DISPUTE

Police responded to CVS Pharmacy, 20 E Dundee Road, at 7 p.m. May 30 for a report of a customer inside the store refusing to wear a mask, in accordance with the Village of Buffalo Grove ordinance. Police met with the customer in the parking lot, who stated they were not wearing the mask properly because they had difficulty breathing with it on. Police reminded the customer of the Village ordinance and that the store has the right to refuse service.

DISPUTE

  • A resident in the 2700 block of Sandalwood Road called police at 7:29 p.m. June 3 to report catching someone urinating in the bushes on the golf course that backs up to their yard. The resident said that this is a common event and most times people apologize and move on to another bush. On this occasion, the person told the resident, "I can pee wherever I want." The resident ran around the bushes to get a photo of the person and was confronted. The person admitted to police of urinating in the bushes and felt threatened when the resident got in their personal space to take a photo; and started yelling at them.
  • Witnesses called police at 12:17 p.m. May 29 to report two vehicles stopped near Arlington Heights Road and Nichols, with the two drivers out of the cars and pushing each other. The witnesses said the drivers got back in their cars and left. One of the drivers called police to report the incident, stating that the other driver was tailgating them, following them and exchanging words on two separate occasions. The caller said the other driver kicked the rear driver's side door of their vehicle, causing damage.

CIVIL MATTER

A person reported at 2:02 p.m. June 2 that they slipped on an unknown liquid while walking down an aisle at Garden Fresh Market, 770 S Buffalo Grove Road. The person said the store would not call an ambulance and they drove themselves to the hospital.

THEFT

A resident in the 0-100 block of Villa Verde Drive called police at 9:42 p.m. June 3 to report they had ordered hand sanitizer, which had been shipped and delivered to their building. They found the package torn open and the contents taken. There are no surveillance cameras in the common area.

ARRESTS

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

Christian J. Longsworth, 23, of the 1500 block of Crimson Lane, Palatine, was accused of disorderly conduct regarding an incident from June 2 and was arrested the 1100 block of Miller Lane in Buffalo Grove. He was given a court date of July 14.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Bogdan Figel, 62, of the 1700 block of Drury Lane, Arlington Heights, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to reduce speed, and was arrested at 12:35 p.m. June 4 at Buffalo Grove Road and Dundee Road. Figel registered a blood alcohol level of .173 in a preliminary breath test at the scene and refused to take a breathalyzer test at the station. His bond was set at $1,000 and he had a June 4 court date.
