School Board Approves Demolition Of Home For Future Early Learning Center In Wheeling

The board authorized demolition expenses not to exceed $90,000 as the district continues preparing the site for construction.

WHEELING, Ill. — The Community Consolidated School District 21 Board of Education recently approved demolition of a residential property at 2836 Hintz Road in Wheeling, one of three properties the district acquired for the future development of its Early Learning Center.

The board authorized demolition expenses not to exceed $90,000 as the district continues preparing the site for construction. The property includes a single-family home and was purchased in 2025 as part of a multi-property acquisition tied to the Early Learning Center project.

Demolition is expected to take place in April.

"This is an important milestone as we continue to invest in early childhood education and expand opportunities for our youngest learners," Superintendent Dr. Michael Connolly said in a news release from the district. "Preparing this site brings us one step closer to creating a dedicated space designed to support student growth and success from the very beginning."

Officials said the district completed several required steps before demolition in coordination with its architect, Arcon and Associates. According to the district, that work included developing a demolition plan, disconnecting utilities through Nicor and ComEd, removing the well and septic systems, conducting asbestos testing and securing permits.

Contractors have been engaged to carry out the demolition and restore the land afterward. That restoration work is set to include installation of silt and construction fencing.

The district is also coordinating with the Wheeling police and fire departments as part of the process. According to the district, those departments will use the structure for training exercises before demolition.

Removing the house is a necessary step in preparing the combined site for future construction of the Early Learning Center. The project is intended to enhance early learning experiences across the community, according to the district.
