2 In Custody In Incident That Led to Lockdowns

LAKE COUNTY, IL — Two people are in custody in connection with an incident that led to soft lockdowns at area schools and businesses Friday morning, police said. Vernon Hills Police were called to a business in the 1000 block of South Woodlands Parkway for a report of a man who was allegedly trying to get into parked cars and entered one car in the business’s parking lot, according to a news release from the Vernon Hills Police Department. The caller also reported the suspect had a handgun.

The man left the area and walked toward a residence in the 1100 block of Port Clinton. Officers searched the area but did not immediately find the suspect, police said.

The College of Lake County Vernon Southlake Campus, Vernon Hills High School, Stevenson High School as well as several businesses were advised of the situation and asked to implement a soft lockdown, police said.

Officers subsequently found the man matching the description and took him and a second person in the area into curtesy. An airsoft replica handgun was recovered, police said.

The lockdowns were lifted at area businesses and schools following the arrests.

The suspects are currently being held while the matter is under investigation.
