Grundy Co. Voters Defeated $90 Million Minooka School Referendum

The school referendum was one of the key ballot measures facing voters of the Minooka and Shorewood areas Tuesday.

MINOOKA, IL - A $90 million school bond measure appeared to gain support from voters in two of the three counties but that was not enough. Voters who live in Will, Grundy and Kendall Counties went to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to issue $90 million in school building bonds for the Minooka Community Consolidated School District No. 201. There was a slim margin of support for the bonds from voters in Will County as well as voters in Kendall County, but the voters in Grundy County, by a wide margin, came out and voted against it by nearly 800 votes.

Based on unofficial projections after tallying the unofficial vote totals from all three counties, Will, Kendall and Grundy it appears the $90 million school bond proposition was defeated by nearly 670 votes.

Here were the unofficial vote totals for all three counties:

According to the District 201 website, the $90 million bond would pay for a new 5-8 school building modeled after the current Minooka Intermediate School, a new elementary school and additions to Jones Elementary and Aux Sable Elementary school buildings.

According to Minooka school representatives, "we cannot promise that taxes will not go up. Our plan is to structure the bond payments so that they increase each year as overall property value increases, allowing the tax rate needed to repay the debt to remain the same."
