Siwek Posts Bond In Death Of Little Channahon Dog

Will County issued a warrant last week for Joseph Siwek's arrest after Channahon police say he killed a 2-pound dog in their village.

CHANNAHON - The Channahon Police Department reports that a 22-year-0ld Bartlett man accused of multiple counts of aggravated animal cruelty turned himself into authorities this week and has posted bond. Joseph Siwek, 22, is accused of killing a small Chihuahua dog that was owned by an acquaintance who lives in Channahon. The incident occurred during the early morning hours of September 25.

According to Channahon police, officers responded to a call about an unresponsive Chihuahua around 2:15 a.m. in the 24600 block of South Tryon Street. Police were told somebody had harmed the dog. Channahon police interviewed the dog's owner at the house. The owner told officers that Siwek hit the dog after the Chihuahua bit him while he was trying to bathe the animal. Channahon police noted that the Chihuahua weighed barely 2 pounds.

The little dog was taken by Channahon police to a 24-hour veterinary clinic where the dog died. Police say the medical exam determined the Chihuahua had suffered significant head injuries.

Channahon Deputy Chief of Police Adam Bogart said that Siwek turned himself into Channahon police on Monday. His bond was set at $10,000, and Siwek immediately posted $1,000 cash, or 10 percent, to remain free as his criminal case is pending in Will County.

On Wednesday morning, Bogart told Patch that allegations of people killing pets are not common in Channahon. "We rarely have animal cruelty cases so it's kind of rare," Bogart said.

Bogart called Siwek an acquaintance of the Channahon pet owner. The defendant lives in the village of Bartlett, which encompasses Kane, DuPage and Cook Counties.

"This case took precedence for us," Bogart said. "The family is pretty distraught. It was pretty traumatic for them."
