Crest Hill Sex Offender Hides in Closet to Avoid Arrest, Fights US Marshal: Prosecutors
The 47-year-old Crest Hill man was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

A convicted sex offender has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for fighting with a U.S. Marshal who was trying to arrest him for an outstanding warrant.
In 2015, David Kapus, 47, of 2109 Plainfield Road in Crest Hill, received probation for failing to register as a sex offender. Since that time, Kapus failed to report to the DuPage County Probation Department as ordered by the Court and subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued for him, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin.

Kapus appeared in court June 14 where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of disarming a police officer, a class 1 felony.
On March 23, 2016, at around 10:40 a.m., detectives attempted to take Kapus into custody after finding him hiding in a closet above a washer/drier unit in a Naperville home, Berlin said. As detectives struggled with Kapus, one of the detectives attempted to tase him. During the struggle, Kapus disarmed the detective. Following the brief struggle, Kapus was taken into custody. None of the detectives were injured, according to Berlin.

“Not only did Mr. Kapus flee the law in an attempt to avoid court-ordered sex offender registration, he also fought with officers as they attempted to apprehend him,” Berlin said. “Mr. Kapus’ obvious disdain for the law has caught up with him and he will now spend a significant amount of time behind bars.”
