Minooka Quilt Guild Makes Quilt for Raffle
The raffle for the colorful quilt will benefit the Youth Services Department of the Three Rivers Public Library.
A Minooka woman’s self-taught passion for quilting lead to organizing a quilt guild in Minooka in 2010, and the quilt guild is now raffling its first charity quilt.
All proceeds from the quilt raffle will be donated to Youth Services Department. The raffle winner will be chosen at the Old Fashioned Community picnic on October 2nd.
Kim Herzog is one of the founders of the 30-member guild. Herzog and other guild members realized that the group needed a recipient for its inaugural efforts at a charity quilt.

“My children, ages 2 and 6, have gotten so much out of the children’s library. In this age, there is so much that is electronic, the people at the library do so much that is creative…that’s how we ended up doing something for our hometown.”
The Log Cabin Quilters of Minooka created the “Skip to My Lou” quilt named after the children’s song. The quilt itself echoes the free-spirited and colorful way that children play. A Quilter's Corner
The guild has grown rapidly in its two years, and now has about 30 members. It has two monthly meetings, the second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Aux Sable Township Building on Route 6, and fourth Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. at the Herzog said the morning meetings focus on presentations about styles, and types of quilting, and organizational and historic information; whereas, the evening meeting is a hands-on meeting, where the women actually bring their machines and fabric and work on projects.
“Everyone is friendly and open, it’s not very formal. We talk and laugh; it’s more of a group in that way," she said. The members share their love of quilting. No one feels left behind.”
Herzog moved to Minooka from Tinley Park, and had belonged to a guild there. She thinks the guild has grown so much because of the two monthly meeting, and because there is no other guild close by. Other area guilds are in Joliet, Plainfield, and Morris.
The library district is thrilled to be the recipient of the first donated quilt from the guild. Mary Soucie, Executive Director of the library said “We are more than happy to have donations go toward our youth services department. We have many activities planned and the donations will help to make them happen.”
