2 Designer Dogs Worth $4,000 Stolen From Arlington Heights Pet Store

The theft happened Monday when a clerk left to get a mop after one of the canines proved it wasn't housebroken.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Two designer dogs worth more than $2,000 each were stolen from a village pet shop Monday while a store clerk was looking for a mop to clean up some doggy doo-doo, according to Arlington Heights police.

The theft happened at around 5:57 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at the Happiness Is Pets Store, 15 W. Golf Road. A man and a woman entered the shop, asking to buy a dog. The store clerk set them up with a Shih Tzu-poodle mix and a Havanese, and the couple played with the dogs in a pen, police said.

During playtime, one of the dogs demonstrated that it wasn't housebroken and defecated in the pen, according to police. The clerk moved the couple and the dogs to a different pen, then left to get a mop. When the clerk returned, the couple and the dogs were gone, police said.
