More than 100 cars had taken over an intersection on the city's southwest side when gunshots rang out Sunday morning, according to police.

CHICAGO, IL — Five people were struck by gunfire and three died in connection with an overnight shooting that occurred during a drag racing incident involving about 100 cars, according to police.
The shooting happened shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday around the 4300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, police said. A massive caravan had gained control of a West 43rd Street intersection and cars were drifting in the middle of the road, Commander Don Jerome told reporters at a press conference Sunday morning, noting police are aware of other such caravans across the city.
Those who died all suffered wounds to the chest, as well as other areas, and included two 20-year-old men and a male of unknown age, according to police. A 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were hospitalized in critical condition Sunday morning with gunshot wounds to the thigh and abdomen, respectively, but were expected to recover, police said. All five victims had gang affiliations, Jerome noted.
