Chicago Breaks Daily Record Low Temperature

Wednesday marked the coldest Jan. 30 on record, the National Weather Service said.

CHICAGO — A record all-time daily low temperature has been reached in Chicago. Jan. 30 hadn't seen such low temperatures in more than 50 years.

It was minus 19 degrees at 4 a.m. in the city on Wednesday, which beats the last record daily low — minus 15 on Jan. 30, 1966, according to the National Weather Service.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in Chicago is minus 27 degrees, set in 1985.

Wind chill throughout the Chicago area could reach as low as minus 50, the National Weather Service said.

The frigid weather has caused many public transit cancellations and school closures throughout the Chicago area. Warming centers are being offered throughout the city.

At O'Hare and Midway airports, almost 1,500 flights have been cancelled.

Gov. JB Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation Wednesday as Illinois prepared to deal with days of life-threatening wind chills across the state. The "life-threatening" cold could cause frostbite in less than 10 minutes, according to the National Weather Service.
