Saturday was a big day for the Loyola Ramblers women's basketball team. A great team effort was highlighted by a career milestone for one of the players.

The Ramblers beat St. Bonaventure 78-50 to reach double-digits in wins. With a 10-8 record, the Ramblers have already stormed by last season's six wins and there are still 11 games left in the season. In 7th place in the Atlantic 10 Conference, they are also a virtual lock to finish well above last season's last place.

The Ramblers led 19-12 after the first quarter. They also put up 19 points in the second and third quarters, leading the Bonnies 57-41 heading into the last quarter. With victory secured, Coach Allison Guth emptied her bench, giving them valuable playing time.

Before all the starters departed, grad student Sam Galanopoulos had a special moment, scoring her 1,000th point in her career. She is only the 29th Rambler to join the elite club.

For the game, the Ramblers shot 54.9% (28-51), while the Bonnies connected on 36.0% (18-50). The Ramblers led in rebounds (28-20), blocks (4-0) and steals (10-5). Perhaps the most significant stat was points from turnovers, which Loyola won (24-8).

It's quite an improvement for the Ramblers, but not a shocking one. The team played much better than their 6-24 record. Injuries forced the team to play short-handed too many times, while they were adjusting to a new coach and new conference. Still, the Ramblers played tough in every game.

Heading into this season, I felt the Ramblers would easily double their victory total. I predicted a finish above .500. I still feel that will happen.

After the game, Coach Guth praised Galanopoulos for her play on the court and her character. Galanopoulos discussed what the achievement meant to her. The timing was perfect as she reached 1,000 just as Coach Guth was pulling her starters. Both stated it was not intentional to get that tally at home. Either way, it was an added bonus as the home crowd erupted.

There is something special happening at Gentile Arena. Coach Guth has brought a renewed positivity. She takes the mic after every game and thanks the fans. She personally thanks every reporter in the press sessions. She is such a positive beacon. I cannot praise her enough.

With 11 games left, the Ramblers have an excellent shot at nearing 20 wins. Tournament time will be fun, as this team is dangerous.
