Prairie State Offering Free GED Preparation and ESL Classes

The Adult Education Program at Prairie State College is offering free English as a Second Language, Spanish General Education Preparation and Citizenship Training classes beginning Monday, Aug. 29, at the PSC Adult Training and Outreach Center, located on the main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

Late registration is available for the classes at 9:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, and Tuesday, Aug. 30.

PSC also is offering free Off-Campus GED classes beginning Tuesday, Sept. 13. Registration at the Chicago Heights Library, 25 W. 15th St., will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 6.  Registration at the Crete-Monee High School, 1515 W. Exchange in Crete, will begin promptly at 5 p.m. on Sept. 6.

An assessment is required upon registration for all programs and will be administered at the location where the class will be held. The assessment is free. No appointment is necessary for the assessment although participants are encouraged to arrive early as space is limited. Participants also need to bring an official government-issued photo ID and proof of medical card. No children are allowed during the assessment.  

GED classes offer students an opportunity to complete high school studies and receive an equivalency certificate. The GED certificate is accepted as a substitute for a high school diploma.

The ESL program is designed to help people make the transition from different countries and cultures to American society. The purpose of the program is to teach skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening to those whose native language is not English.
