Bloom 206 Gives Gift Cards to Families in Need for Thanksgiving

COVID-19 concerns changed a long time tradition, but the district still pushed forward to serve families.

Several years ago, Bloom 206 Superintendent Lenell Navarre and Bloom Township Athletic Director Joe Reda decided to donate Thanksgiving Baskets to families within the Bloom Township High School District, which includes Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, Steger and several other municipalities. Many faculty, staff, administrators, and Bloom Township Board of Education members donated to this gesture.

Due to the COVID-19 the Bloom Township High School District 206 was unable to continue its usual tradition of providing food baskets to families in need this Thanksgiving, but that didn’t stop district leaders from serving families.

Navarre and several other members of the District Administration team pooled together their personal funds to purchase gift cards for approximately 40 district families. Security Guard and Freshman Baseball Coach Antonio Townes took the time to deliver the gift cards to each of the families.

“The world may look different right now, and it’s part of our responsibilities as a school district to do our best to ensure families are safe,” Navarre said. “It was also deeply and personally important to me and my team that we continue to care for the families in need in the best way we can. It was truly heartwarming to see our administrators come together in service of these wonderful families.”

Among the administrators who funded the gift cards were Director of Student Services Carole Burns, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dorith Johnson, Retired Bloom and Alternative School Principal Michael Campbell and Student Assistance Coordinator Mariba Woods.
