The chance to experience a rare astronomical event is coming to the area when a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party is hosted by the Chicago Heights Public Library. The event will take place this Monday, April 8, with the eclipse occurring at approximately 2 p.m.
Adults and kids will all have a chance to enjoy the eclipse using the special safety glasses that will be provided by the library. Additional activities and informational material will also be provided. It is recommended that participants come early to make the most of the event.
This eclipse is a seldom-seen natural occurrence. The next total solar eclipse will not visit the United States until 2044.

Even if you are not planning to view the eclipse at the library, a limited number of viewing glasses are available and may be picked up at the library. You are not required to be a Chicago Heights resident.
It is important that only approved glasses with a special solar filter are used to view the eclipse. Other glasses, such as regular sunglasses, are not safe for viewing. Looking directly at the sun without special glasses, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent damage to your sight. The glasses distributed by the library were donated by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

The library is located at 25 West 15th Street, at the corner of Chicago Road, one-half block south of Route 30/Lincoln Highway.
