Indiana Man, 20, ID'd As Person Killed In Shooting At Family Party In Crete: Medical Examiner

The man was one of three people shot during the family party early Sunday.

CRETE, IL — A 20-year-old Indiana man has been identified as the person fatally shot at a family party that turned violent in Crete over the weekend, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

David Velazquez, of Hammond, died from multiple gunshot wounds after being shot at the residence located at 27000 S. State Line Road in Crete. Three people were shot at the party, including Velazquez, the Will County Sheriff's Office said. Two other victims remain in critical condition Tuesday, according to Will County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Elizabeth Matthews.

Police received several 911 calls around 1 a.m. reporting a large fight and possible shooting near 27000 S. State Line Road in Crete, officials said.

Deputies who arrived found a large crowd and began life-saving measures before three shooting victims were taken to area hospitals. According to officials, one of the shooting victims—now identified as Velasquez—later died at a hospital in Olympia Fields.

According to officials, the shooting happened during a family party and was believed to be a domestic incident with no threat to the public. The crowd was there for a birthday party for an adult, Matthews said Tuesday. The victims' familial relation—if any—is not clear, she added.

Sheriff's office investigators are still conducting interviews as of Tuesday, Matthews said, and no charges have been filed yet.

The shooting was the third major incident last week in Crete, where police responded to a triple homicide early Monday and where a house fire claimed the lives of a grandfather and three granddaughters days later.
