Southland College Prep Band Brings Home Trophy in Chicago Classic

Southland College Prep Charter High School's Ambassador Marching Band and Marching Lady Eagles competed for the first time in the Chicago Football Classic's Battle of the High School Bands and brought home second place. First place went to another band from the south suburbs, Rich Township 227.

The Chicago Football Classic, a game between two Historically Black Colleges and Universities, returned to Soldier Field for the first time since 2019. Started in 1997, the Chicago Classic is a weeklong celebration which includes a football game between two HBCUs, a college and career fair, and a battle of the bands. Before the game, Chicago area high schools battled on the Great Lawn of Soldier Field.

Junior high school band members from Matteson School District 162 had a chance to cheer for Southland College Prep and Rich Township. The band members from O.W. Huth Middle School also enjoyed the game and halftime show battle of the bands between Central State University and Mississippi Valley State University.

Central State University won the football game and Mississippi Valley State won the Battle of the Bands between the colleges. A recent graduate of Southland College Prep, Asia Murphy, is a member of the Mississippi Valley State band.
