UPDATE: Elderly Man In Critical Condition After Metra Train Hits Car On Tracks

The crash happened at 7:25 p.m. on Wednesday.

LAKE BARRINGTON, IL – A 78-year-old Barrington man is in critical condition after a car was hit be a Metra train Wednesday night in Lake Barrington. The crash caused extensive delays along the Union Pacific Northwest line as authorities responded to investigate the incident.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation has revealed a 2009 Cadillac CTS was on the railroad tracks about 100 feet southeast of Kelsey Road near Route 14 when the car was struck by an outbound train headed toward Fox River Grove, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said it appeared the driver of the car had just exited his vehicle or was in the process of exiting at the time of the collision, according to authorities.
