3 Gold Coins Worth $6K Left In McHenry Red Kettle

MCHENRY, IL — Three more coins totaling an estimated $6,000 were left in Salvation Army red kettles in McHenry County in recent days. The Dec. 14 donation of the coins, all three one-ounce gold South African Krugerrand coins, was left in a kettle outside Jewel-Osco, 4222 W. Elm Street in McHenry.

So far, 10 gold coins have been left in red kettles in McHenry County this holiday season.

"We continue to be amazed by the overwhelming generosity of a community that cares so much about its neighbors,” said Barbara Owen, corps officer for The Salvation Army of McHenry County. “It is because of donations like this that we are able to serve so many in our community with food, emergency assistance and help for the holidays, including gifts for children and Christmas meal boxes."

All donations made to red kettles helps local residents in need. Donations, including the valuable gold coins, help fund The Salvation Army’s programs and services in McHenry County year-round, and 70 percent of donations to the Salvation Army is made during the Red Kettle Campaign.

For the first time in the organization’s 135-year history, the Salvation Army launched the annual Christmas fund-raising campaign, called Rescue Christmas, nearly two months early to meet a significant increase in need. The Salvation Army of McHenry County adapted its services to meet the unprecedented need since the start of the pandemic, including the creation of a temporary food pantry.
